Counselling in Kent with Mike Berry

They are all relationship-based and aimed at helping people get over problems, heal their wounds and grow as human beings.

As well as working with adults I also see couples, adolescents and children. As a private therapist I work from my home, which has wheelchair access, but also go out to people who find it inconvenient to come to me. This tends to be children in care but can also be people who, for one reason or another, are infirm.

I charge £35 - £45 per hour and 40p per mile if I am not working at my own base. The number of sessions will be negotiated at the start and reviewed regularly so that the work meets your needs.

My belief is that one of the results of psychological dis–ease is disempowerment; so my aim is that when a person has completed a course of therapy with me they will have reclaimed some of that power that – whether they knew it or not – was missing.

The way I work

I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I take ideas and techniques from a number of psychotherapeutic models. At the core of my model is the relationship between the client and the therapist – you and me.

My first love in the field was Transactional Analysis and I still hold by their three core dictums.

"People are OK"
We might do things we regret but beneath our actions, as individuals, we have worth, value, dignity.

"Everyone has the capacity to think"
Sometimes thinking might seem difficult but it is always possible, sometimes with outside assistance, to contact the thinking part of our brain.

"People decide their own destiny, and these decisions can be changed."
As Parlett & Hemming (1996) put it "anyone can, if they want to and have sufficient support, learn how to function in life with greater skill and satisfaction."
